About this work
Californian Party, San Francisco circa 1955
In a salon with a crystal chandelier and painted wall panels, guests stand close together, glasses in hand. A woman in a dark suit laughs at a man in a bow tie; a woman in a white dress and long gloves drinks, her back to us. On the right stands Audrey Hepburn in black, white gloves on, a glass in her hand, looking sideways.
Audrey Hepburn at a party in San Francisco, circa 1955. Slim Aarons stood in the middle of the company, not above it: the white dress in the foreground takes up almost a third of the picture and pushes the rest back. That is exactly why Hepburn stands out. Around her everyone talks, laughs or drinks; she is the only one standing still, looking at something outside the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
