About this work
Natale Rusconi, Venice 1978
A man in a beige suit stands upright behind the windshield of a wooden motorboat with HOTEL CIPRIANI in white letters on the hull. The boat cuts through green water, a collar of foam along the bow; a second man steers. Behind them rise the white facade and dome of a church, and to the left a red brick bell tower against a bright blue sky.
In September 1978 Natale Rusconi rode in a Hotel Cipriani motorboat past the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, on the island of the same name in Venice. Slim Aarons photographed from the water, at eye level with the boat. That puts the picture halfway between a portrait and a cityscape. The varnished hull and the brick tower share the same warm reddish brown, tying the foreground to what lies behind.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
