About this work
Skiing At Courchevel, 1963
Beneath a snowy mountain face with dark bands of forest lies a terrace in the snow, full of wooden deck chairs with skiers sitting in the sun. Small groups of people stand around a chalet with a snow-covered roof. In the foreground a skier in a red jacket glides slowly past, poles trailing behind. Above, only a deep blue sky and a second, higher peak.
Skiers on the slopes at Courchevel in France, 1963. Slim Aarons let the mountain take up most of the frame, so the people form a narrow strip along the bottom. That proportion makes the picture: the mountain face is enormous and indifferent, and life plays out in one thin layer of color on the snow. The red jacket in the foreground is the point the eye keeps returning to.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
