About this work
New England Skiing, New Hampshire 1955
A woman with sunglasses and blonde hair bends over a ski she holds at an angle in front of her, the binding turned toward her. Behind her, skis stand in a row against the wooden wall of a hut; above the door hangs a sign reading SKI INSTRUCTORS ONLY. On the right, an arm in an anorak reaches into the frame. The light is hard and falls from the side.
According to the caption, these are skis leaning against the wall of a hut for ski instructors in New Hampshire, 1955. Slim Aarons photographed from slightly below, so the long skis fill the frame as vertical stripes and the ski in her hands becomes the only diagonal. That single slanting line, from lower left almost to the sign, turns a row of equipment against a wall into a picture in which something is happening.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
