About this work
Marbella House Party, Marbella 1967
Beneath tall, slender pines a party sits on white sofas and cushions around a low table crowded with glasses and dishes. Two women wear pink turbans, another a yellow suit; at left sits a bare-chested man. Behind them a lawn runs to a balustrade with statues, and beyond it lies the sea with a white boat. On the grass more guests stand among red chairs.
Guests at a party at the home of Sebastiano Bergese in Marbella, 1967. The upright format gives the trees room: the trunks shoot up in stripes and take up more than half of the picture. The party sits small at their foot, as if in a colonnade. Between the trunks you see three layers, the terrace, the lawn and the sea, which give the party a spacious backdrop.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
