About this work
Von Oswald House, 1986
On a large lawn a group sits in white chairs with orange cushions around a round table; a man in a dark vest stands beside them. Farther off lies a pool with rounded corners in front of a white country house with a high dark roof, against a slope of spruces. On the left two people in red and white cross the grass, and a dog lies in the sun.
The caption says little: a group of people relax in the garden of Johanna Von Oswald's house, in 1986. Slim Aarons photographed from a little above eye level and let the lawn take up most of the frame. All that green turns the house, the pool and the people into small islands on a large surface, and the orange of the cushions returns in the parasols and loungers farther off.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
