About this work
Hotel Taormina Pool, Sicily 1975
From steeply above you look down a green slope onto a swimming pool built against the rocks by the sea. On the terrace stand orange and yellow parasols, swimmers lie in the blue water. Beyond, the lighter water of the sea gives way to deep blue; a rock juts out of the sea, two small boats lie still and a speedboat draws a long white streak.
The caption names the seaside swimming pool of the Hotel Taormina in Sicily, in August 1975. Slim Aarons chose a viewpoint high on the slope and the upright format. That way the blue of the pool and the blue of the sea lie directly above one another, separated by no more than a narrow wall. The constructed water and the open water look almost the same, apart from the shade.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
