About this work

Massimo Family, Rome 1960

In a dark colonnade with a floor of geometric tiles, a family poses. An older woman in a floral dress and a man in a dark suit sit in the middle on two chairs; around them stand four young men in suits and a young woman in a red cardigan. On the left a bronze bust stands on a marble column, behind the man a stone lion.

The caption names Prince and Princess Massimo, photographed in 1960 with five of their six children in their residence, the Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne in Rome. Slim Aarons let the family stand small in the space and gave the architecture the upper hand. The columns, the bust and the lion stand as upright as the children, so that family and house form a single whole. Only the red cardigan breaks the dark tones.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
