About this work
Newport Mainstays, 1987
A large party in summer clothes sits and stands on a rocky outcrop by the water: white trousers, striped sweaters, a red skirt, a straw hat here and there. Above them a rainbow-colored kite hangs against a blue sky with cumulus clouds. Behind the group stand a blue-and-white striped parasol and a yellow one, and in the foreground the dry grass bends.
Rudulph Ellis Carter held a picnic in Newport in August 1987; the caption names twenty-three guests, from Yusha Auchincloss to Mary Carter. Slim Aarons set the camera low in the grass, so the rock works like a grandstand and the party rises in one long row above the horizon. The kite in the empty sky gives the picture a second focal point, though only the man at the far left points at it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
