About this work
San Diego Home, 1960
In a long, softly lit living room a woman stands with one hand on her hip, in a full dress with a blue and white print, a pearl necklace and white pumps. A crystal chandelier with candles hangs above her. Around her are white sofas, a round glass table with a book, an obelisk, a mantelpiece with white and yellow flowers and a large print on the wall.
American singer and actress Lola Albright stood in Richard Lawson's penthouse in Los Angeles, California, in 1960. She wore a puff-skirted dinner dress of onondaga silk taffeta, by Marusia. In the image she stands not in the center but to the right of the doorway, so the room itself gets most of the frame. Her dress is the only blue in an interior of white, beige, yellow and shadow.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
