About this work
Skiers In St. Moritz, Switzerland 1963
From above you look down on a snowy road where dozens of skiers are returning to the village, skis on their shoulders. Halfway along, two grey cars are parked beside a terrace with chairs and small tables. In the background stands a house with a thick layer of snow on its roof, and among the conifers on the slope even more people make their way down.
This shot, too, was taken in March 1963 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and the caption speaks only of skiers. Here nobody is at the center. The high vantage point turns the walk back into a pattern: dark figures scattered across the white, in groups of two or three, with the ochre facade of a building as a vertical edge on the right. Your eye follows the stream from the upper slope to the bottom of the frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
