About this work
Cafe In Monte Carlo, 1975
Under a roof of yellow parasols with white fringe, guests sit at white tables on a terrace. In front sits a woman in large sunglasses and a blue bikini top, a black-and-white patterned cloth around her hips; beside her a woman in navy, with bread, glasses and a bottle on the table. A man in a yellow shirt stands among the tables. Behind the parasols, a rock face.
Diners on a cafe terrace in Monte Carlo, Monaco, August 1975. Slim Aarons photographed from table height, between the parasol poles, so that you seem to be sitting at the terrace rather than looking at it. The yellow above and the white of the chairs below keep the picture light. The woman in sunglasses sits motionless among it all, while everything moves behind her.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
