About this work
La Coquille, Palm Beach 1955
Looking straight down, you see a hotel with long wings under gray roofs, folded around a kidney-shaped swimming pool. A smaller pool lies right beside it. White parasols and a long set table stand on the terrace, and the palms cast their shadows like dark stars across the lawn and the road along the bottom edge.
Slim Aarons photographed La Coquille Hotel from the air in 1955, above Palm Beach in Florida. The caption names the hotel and its swimming pool, and the image turns on them too. Because the camera looks straight down, the roofs flatten into gray planes and the water becomes the brightest color. The palm shadows, sharper than the palms themselves, give the flat composition its depth.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
