About this work

Von Furstenbergs, Schloss Furstenberg 1977

A man and a woman walk hand in hand along a gravel path toward the camera, he in a beige jacket carrying a bag, she in a dark jacket and a striped skirt. A large, shaggy dog walks beside them. Behind them a helicopter stands on the gravel, and beyond it a large palace with a fountain, a dome and a flag on the roof.

In June 1977 Slim Aarons photographed His Serene Highness Heinrich von und zu Furstenberg and his new wife Maximiliana in the grounds of Schloss Furstenberg. They had arrived in a Bell Jet Ranger whose tail is painted in the family colors, matching the flag on the roof. That link makes the picture: from the helicopter's tail to the flag above the dome runs a single line in the same colors.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
