About this work
Caleta Beach, Acapulco 1961
From high on a slope you look across a bay with a curved sandy beach, rows of beach chairs and boats on light blue water. On the right, hotel buildings stand all the way to the rocks; on a roof, HOTEL BOCACHICA is spelled out in large letters. In the foreground, among flowering shrubs, people lie by a small pool with a mushroom-shaped canopy and red-and-white striped loungers.
A view from above of Caleta Beach, also called Morning Beach, in Acapulco, Mexico, January 1961; on the right Hotel Boca Chica can be seen. Slim Aarons built the picture in three layers: the little pool with sunbathers right under the lens, the beach in the middle, the hills and high-rises at the back. The small, enclosed terrace in front is the vantage point from which the crowd on the beach beyond becomes easy to take in.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
