About this work
Smeralda Architect, Costa Smeralda circa 1978
A man with gray hair, in a navy jacket and white trousers, stands on a lawn with a straw hat in his hands. Behind him winds a building that seems grown rather than built: an undulating shell in green and rust red, with round openings like eyes and a patch of mosaic on the right. Shrubs grow on the roof.
Around 1978, architect Jacques Couelle stood on the Costa Smeralda, Karim Aga Khan's development in Sardinia that Couelle designed. Slim Aarons placed him exactly in front of the largest opening, so the dark hollow behind him works as a frame around his figure. The designer stands small and upright, neatly in blue and white; the building bends, winds and seems to look at him.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
