About this work
Tres Vidas, Acapulco 1975
Under a dark pergola a white bar stands in the middle of the swimming pool, with a brick arch above it. A man and a woman sit in the water on the bar stools, each with a cocktail: the man's is hidden behind pink flowers, the woman drinks from a green coconut. Behind the bar stand two bartenders in flowered shirts. Through the arch: yellow parasols, palms, more guests.
Guests drink cocktails at the pool bar of Tres Vidas, a private members club in Acapulco, Mexico, in February 1975. The image is built as a series of frames within frames. The pergola frames the bar, the bar frames the arch and the arch frames the garden beyond. At the center of all that framing, the two guests sit in the water, just above the waterline.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
