About this work
T.S. Eliot On The Beach, Love Beach 1957
In this upright image the palm takes up the top half: a slender trunk rising at a slant and a crown of green and withered fronds against a cloudy sky. Below it a man in a gray suit and straw hat sits on a white folding chair, smaller in the frame. Two dark posts stick out of the sand by his feet; low round-leaved plants grow at left.
According to the caption this is TS Eliot, the Anglo-American poet and playwright, on Love Beach on New Providence, in 1957 on his honeymoon in the Bahamas. The image was published in Holiday Magazine in March 1960. Here the tall crop decides it: the poet moves into the lower half, beneath a tree that claims the space above, and the beach gets as much room as the man.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
