About this work
Leisure Time In Acapulco, 1978
A woman in a straw hat stands waist-deep in a swimming pool, leaning on the edge, a glass of a dark drink in her hand. She wears a white strapless bikini top and looks calmly into the lens. A pair of sunglasses lies on the stone edge. Behind her palm fronds and long green leaves form a dark wall; the water is clear blue.
A woman in a sun hat enjoyed a drink in a swimming pool in Acapulco, Mexico, in January 1978. What gives the image its tension is the light: the brim of the hat casts a shadow across her forehead and eyes, while her shoulders and the pool edge lie in bright sun. From under that shadow she looks back at you, and the dark green behind her lets her figure stand apart.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
