About this work
Portofino Harbour, 1977
A small harbor sits in a basin between wooded hills. Along the quay stand narrow houses in ocher, pink and yellow, with awnings and parasols above the café terraces. The water is full of boats: wooden rowboats on the shore, motorboats and sailing yachts farther out. People walk in the sun on the square, and on the right-hand hill a building stands among pines.
The harbor of Portofino, the Ligurian town, in August 1977. Aarons chose a vantage point above the square, so that the quay describes an arc that carries the eye from the houses on the left, past the boats, to the opening to the sea. Everything the village does lies within that one bend: living, eating, sailing. The dark water in the middle keeps the bustle of the quays apart.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
