About this work
Oscar De La Renta, Casa de Campo 1985
Oscar De La Renta sits barefoot and in white on a rattan sofa with cushions in a blue-and-white ikat pattern, one arm along the backrest. In front of him stand two low tables, one with a stack of books, the other with a tea tray. Lamps and large potted palms flank the scene; behind him the wooden wall opens onto a garden full of green light.
Fashion designer Oscar De La Renta relaxed in February 1985 in the living room of his apartment, Casa de Madera, in the Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic. Aarons places him in the center of an almost symmetrical room: lamp opposite lamp, palm opposite palm, chair opposite chair. Against that strict arrangement the one loose posture stands out, bare feet on the rug and an arm casually to the side.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
