About this work

Rockefeller Brothers, New York 1960

Four men in dark suits sit at a long, glossy wooden table, a fifth standing behind them with a white pocket square in his breast pocket. On the table lie books, papers and two white dishes. The wall behind is filled from floor to ceiling with cabinets of bound volumes in red, green and brown; on the right the room continues into a second space.

The Rockefeller brothers in their office at Radio City, New York: from left to right Laurance, Winthrop, John D. Rockefeller III, David and Nelson. The image appeared in A Wonderful Time. Aarons turns it into a tableau: four brothers in one line, one standing upright and so breaking the row. The wall of books behind them is as full and regular as an archive, and makes the five look small.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
