About this work
CZ's Dogs, Palm Beach circa 1955
A blonde woman in a white top and white shorts walks toward the camera along a long turquoise pool, a small white dog in her arm. Ahead of her walk a large brown dog and a black curly-haired dog. Beyond the water stands a round temple with columns and a statue, and behind it a balustrade, the sea and palms under a gray sky.
Mrs F. C. Winston Guest, also known as Cee Zee Guest, with her dogs in front of the pool with the Grecian temple at Villa Artemis, her oceanfront estate in Palm Beach, Florida, circa 1955. Aarons builds the image along one long axis, from temple across water to steps. Guest and her dogs come over that line toward you, and the animals take the solemnity out of the strict architecture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
