About this work
Camelback Inn, Scottsdale 1967
From above you see a terrace full of striped parasols in yellow, pink, green and white around a blue swimming pool. Guests sit at small tables in the shade, a man in a blue shirt with his back to you. In the foreground two young women walk in bikinis, one in turquoise and one in orange, with short shadows at their feet.
Guests by the pool at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Arizona, in April 1967. Aarons photographed from a high point, so that the parasols are seen from above as round disks with spokes. The image works as a pattern that only opens up at the bottom: there, on the empty stretch of tiles, the two women walk side by side and give the busy composition a direction.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
