About this work
Oberon's Lunch, Acapulco circa 1966
Beneath tall, slanting palms a party sits at a table with a flowered cloth, on white openwork chairs. Two guests wear a pink headscarf, a third a white one. Behind them lie large round boulders in the sun, and in the foreground palm fronds fan out in the shade. On the table stand cups and a pitcher.
Film star Merle Oberon and her lunch guests at La Consentida, her villa in Acapulco, circa 1966. Oberon sits second from the right, facing the camera. Aarons keeps his distance and lets the palm trunks dominate the image: the people sit small at the bottom, in an opening between the trees. It feels like a glance that has just looked through the greenery, discovered rather than staged.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
