About this work
Anina Cuevas, Marbella 1982
In the opening of a stable door a white horse sticks its head out and nibbles at something a laughing woman holds out to him. She wears a blue-and-white striped blouse with ruffles. To her left and right two blond girls in swim trunks sit on the lower door; one looks into the lens, the other sideways at the woman.
Anina Cuevas with her two daughters and a small horse in Marbella, 1982. In the composition the horse takes the place that a third child would hold in a family portrait, right between the mother and one of the daughters. Aarons simply lets it happen: the animal eats, the mother laughs, one girl poses and the other looks aside.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
