About this work

Drinks At Gstaad, 1984

More than ten women sit and stand on a snowy terrace, most of them in fur coats, around two white tables with orange flowers. They hold glasses of red and green drinks and talk to one another. Behind them stand chalets and bare, pruned trees, and beyond rise wooded slopes and snowy peaks against a pale sky.

Models of the Parisian jeweler M. Gerard had drinks on the terrace of The Palace Hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland, in 1984. What carries the photograph is repetition: nearly every woman wears a different fur, from white and gray to dark brown, and together they form a swatch book against the snow. Aarons keeps the image wide and low, so that mountains and hotel stay background and the group fills the frame.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
