About this work

Skiers In Gstaad, 1961

Two women stand on skis in bright sun, their poles slanted in the snow. The one in front wears a brown sweater with a red turtleneck, sunglasses and a headband; the second, a little behind, a white knitted sweater and sunglasses too. Behind them stands a hut with a thick layer of snow on its roof, and farther off a row of jagged mountain peaks.

Skiers in Gstaad, Switzerland, in March 1961. What carries the photograph is the difference between the two figures: the one in front is sharp and close, looks at the camera and takes up much of the height, while the second is half hidden behind her. With the mountains behind, this creates depth in three steps, and the cool blue sky makes the warm brown of the sweater all the stronger.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
