About this work

Porto Ercole, 1967

On the quay stand two scooters; on one sits a woman in a striped blouse eating something, on the other two girls in pink. A young man in an open white shirt stands between them and touches the chin of one of the girls. Behind them people walk along the water, boats lie in the harbor and people sit on a terrace.

The waterfront of Porto Ercole, in August 1967. The scene is an in-between moment: the young man seems to be saying or teasing something, the girl lets it happen, the woman on the left simply keeps eating. With the low camera height, just above the scooters' handlebars, you stand in the middle of it as a bystander, while the bustle in the background fans out toward the harbor. Nobody seems to notice the photographer.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
