About this work
Hotel Du Palais Biarritz, 1985
A winding swimming pool with bright blue water runs from left to right across the foreground, with a single swimmer on the left. On the terrace behind it stand white tables, chairs and parasols, and a planter with purple flowers. Farther on lies a crowded beach, waves roll against the rocks, and large white buildings stand on the coast under a clear blue sky.
The curved pool on the beach at the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, France, in September 1985. The photograph stacks layers on top of one another: at the bottom the still blue of the pool, above it the terrace like a dam, and behind it the white surf of the ocean. With its wavy edge, the pool looks like a tame echo of the sea behind it. The pool fills the entire lower edge of the picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
