About this work
Henley Royal Regatta, 1955
Under an awning with a scalloped edge stand spectators with their backs to the camera, dark silhouettes in flat caps and one straw hat. In front of them a rowing boat with a crew in white shirts glides across the river. On the far side lies a long boat full of people, and behind it stand a grandstand with a green roof, a house with gables and tall trees.
Spectators at the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames, in 1955. The photograph was taken from behind the crowd, under the same awning, so that heads and hats form a dark border along the bottom and the race shows through between them. You are not watching the race but watching with the spectators. The straw hat on the right, sharply outlined against the water, is the detail the eye keeps returning to.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
