About this work
Senator Goldwater, Scottsdale 1967
Barry Goldwater stands in the desert, one hand on the rim of a green-painted wagon with white spoked wheels. He wears a light cowboy hat, an ochre suede jacket with large pockets, a gray-blue shirt and jeans. His other hand rests on his hip. Behind him the dry, flat land fades away under a white sky.
In April 1967 Senator Barry Goldwater posed beside a buckboard, an open farm wagon, in the area around Scottsdale, Arizona, dressed in authentic western style. The image appeared in A Wonderful Time. What carries the portrait is color. The suede jacket, the hat and the sandy ground sit close together in tone, so the senator almost melts into the landscape; only the green of the wagon and the blue of the jeans stand out.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
