About this work

Chateau Saint-Martin, Vence 1986

On a terrace with yellow tablecloths and white parasols, guests sit at breakfast behind a low stone wall with flower pots. At left a waiter in a red jacket approaches with a tray. Behind the terrace stand a white building with a tall, bare tower with two balconies, a wall of ivy and a mountain slope with villas among the greenery.

Breakfast on the veranda of the Chateau Saint-Martin, a luxury hotel in Vence on the Côte d'Azur, in 1986. According to the caption, the building was once a Commanderie of the Knights Templar, with a history going back to the twelfth century. The image sets those two eras side by side: below, the light bustle of parasols and yellow cloths, above, the austere white tower that has hardly a window.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
