About this work
Saint-Tropez Swimmer, August 1971
A young woman stands hip-deep in the blue water and looks smiling straight into the camera. She wears a cap with stars and red-and-white stripes, red briefs with a white pattern and a few thin necklaces with pendants, and lets her arms hang in the water at her sides. Behind her the sea lies otherwise empty, apart from one swimmer in the distance.
Slim Aarons photographed this swimmer in Saint-Tropez, on the French Riviera, in August 1971. The framing is simple: water from top to bottom and a single figure in the middle. That emptiness is what gives the colors weight; the red of the cap and the briefs is the only vivid thing in a field of blue. The waterline at her hips divides the picture: sharp above, distorted by ripples below.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
