About this work

Missouri Hunt, St Louis circa 1955

In front of a white house with black shutters and a columned portico, riders in hunting dress gather on the grass. A woman in a long riding skirt sits on a pale horse; men in boots, in caps or top hats, rein in their horses. In the middle a man in a white jacket stands with a tray by a set table with bottles. Bare trees frame the scene.

A hunting party on horseback in St Louis, Missouri, circa 1955: that is how the caption describes this black-and-white picture by Slim Aarons. It looks like a moment of gathering. The riders stand scattered, no one looks the same way, and the only thing standing still is the little table with the attendant behind it. That white patch in the middle of the grass holds the composition together and shows that something is to be drunk first.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
