About this work
Party In Bermuda, June 1970
On the afterdeck of a sailing yacht a young man in a dark blazer and white shorts shakes the hand of a man in pink trousers. Between them flutter a flag with stars, stripes and an anchor and two signal flags in yellow, red and black. Further forward, guests in summer dresses and suits stand among the rigging. On the transom the name Ondine is written in gold.
A party on the deck of the yacht Ondine in Bermuda, in June 1970, photographed from above by Slim Aarons. From that high vantage point above the transom you look along the whole length of the ship, to the water beyond the bow. The picture is built from diagonals: masts, stays, flagpoles. The guests stand small among them, and the handshake in the foreground is the one gesture that holds your eye.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
