About this work

Island Paradise, Cavallo 1984

Large round gray boulders frame a bay of clear turquoise water above white sand. On the small beach lie two striped towels; a tiny figure stands next to them in the sun and a second wades through the shallow water. On the right two people swim among the rocks. Farther out more rocks lie in the sea, a motorboat and, on the horizon, a few white sails.

In August 1984 Slim Aarons photographed swimmers on a rocky promontory of the Mediterranean island of Cavallo, Corsica, as the caption puts it. The people are small here; the landscape is the subject. The smooth, rounded rocks in the foreground return in the boulders farther out and in the rocks on the horizon, so that your eye is led in three steps from the coast out to sea.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
