About this work
Flamingos In Flight, Curaçao January 1979
A long flock of pink flamingos flies low and level through the picture, from edge to edge, against a heavy grey sky of cloud. Below lie shallow lagoons, separated by a narrow dam of white sand and green. The water in the foreground is light green and blue. On the right, on the horizon, stands a building; otherwise the land is flat and empty.
Flamingos in flight over Curaçao, in the Netherlands Antilles, in January 1979: that is how Slim Aarons captured them. The birds form a single band, just above the horizon, and that band runs parallel to the dam below and the waterlines behind it. The picture thus consists of horizontal stripes. Only the pink breaks the grey and blue-green calm, and that is enough to carry your eye along from left to right.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
