About this work
Hotel De Paris In Monaco, June 1977
A black open sports car with red upholstery stands in front of the entrance to the Hotel de Paris; a man and a blonde woman sit in it. On the left stands a red racing car. On the steps under the blue awning stand men in suits and women in white. Above them the facade bears statues, round windows and the name of the hotel.
Slim Aarons stood in front of the entrance to the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in June 1977. He photographed low, about at the height of the cars, so that the black car with its wire wheels fills the whole lower part of the picture. The people on the steps thereby become an audience. Everyone stands or watches, except the two in the car, who alone seem to be going somewhere.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
