About this work
Skiing In Seefeld, 1985
Seven cross-country skiers glide in single file along a flat track, in red, black and light blue suits. Behind them runs a red fence, and beyond it a village of chalets with wooden balconies climbs the slope. Everything is white: the roofs, the field, the pines that fill the whole upper part of the picture. At upper right a strip of blue sky remains.
A group of men and women went cross-country skiing in Seefeld, Austria, in 1985, and Slim Aarons photographed them from the side. The skiers stand in a row along the bottom edge, small and evenly spaced, like notes on a stave. Above them the landscape piles up: fence, houses, forest. Because of this proportion the picture is less about sport than about the place, and the figures become a rhythm in the snow.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
