About this work
Flamingos In Curacao, January 1979
Dozens of flamingos break away from a turquoise lagoon; some still touch the water, where small splashes leap up, others are already at height. Their wings are in every position, pink with black edges. Behind them lies a dark strip of low land, and above it blue rain clouds gather. Two birds fly ahead of the rest at upper right.
According to the caption, these flamingos flew over Curaçao, in the Netherlands Antilles, in January 1979, in front of the lens of Slim Aarons. Where a tight formation gives calm, this is the moment of take-off. The birds are spread over two heights, the splashes betray which ones have just pushed off, and the two leaders set the direction. The turquoise water under the threatening sky makes the pink even brighter.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
