About this work

Fishing On Honeymoon Porch, Exuma 1967

A young man in checked swim trunks sits on the railing of a wooden porch and holds a fishing rod over the water. Beside him a woman in a flower-print bikini leans against the wooden wall, under a roof of dried palm leaves; a shell lies on the railing. Behind them a two-masted sailing yacht lies at anchor, and a small boat with a red and white sail.

A couple relaxed on a porch in Exuma, in the Bahamas, in 1967, and Slim Aarons captured it. Neither looks at the camera: he keeps his eyes on the line, she looks aside and down. Those averted gazes make the picture calm rather than posed. The porch draws a dark brown frame around the scene, while behind it the pale water and the white yacht almost dissolve into the light.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
