About this work
Snorkelling Holiday, circa 1975
A man and a woman wade through shallow, crystal-clear water toward the beach, fins and masks in hand. He wears dark swim trunks and black straps over his shoulders, she a green bikini. On the right an orange speedboat with a white rim lies on the sand, and past the boat a wet, shaggy dog walks through the surf.
A snorkelling holiday on the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, circa 1975, photographed from above by Slim Aarons. From that high vantage point the horizon almost disappears and the water becomes a pale floor, with the shadows of people, boat and dog sharp upon it. The dog, the only one without equipment, takes the emphasis off the sport and turns it into an ordinary afternoon on the beach.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
