On a white beach three straw parasols stand in a row, with sun loungers and guests in swimwear beneath them. On the right a couple stand under a rainbow-colored umbrella looking at the water. Across the turquoise water a speedboat pulls a water-skier behind it, with a broad white arc of foam. On the far side mountains lie under high cumulus clouds.
Guests relaxed in February 1973 on the beach of a private island owned by Benigno Toda Jr., president of Philippine Airlines, in the Philippines. Slim Aarons kept the horizon low and let sky and mountains fill well over half the picture. The beach thus becomes a narrow strip on which everything stands in one line: parasols, chairs, guests. The speedboat is the only thing that crosses that row, with its trail of foam slanting through the blue.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
