About this work
Catherine Wilke, Hotel Punta Tragara 1980
Five rows of white cushions lie one above the other in front of an orange tile wall. At the top a blonde woman in a blue bikini props herself on an elbow, facing the camera; lower, one lies with her head on her arms, at the bottom one in a straw hat with a book. At the pool's edge in front, a woman stands with one arm raised high.
Catherine Wilke joined the sunbathers Elisabetta Catalano, Charlotte Ticken and Pamela Grupas in 1980 at the Hotel Punta Tragara on the island of Capri. The caption does not say which of the women in the picture is which. Slim Aarons sets the reclining figures horizontally and the standing one vertically, straight across the rows. The standing woman stretches her arm so high that her hand almost touches the top row, linking the pool at the bottom with the top of the wall.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
