About this work
Maccioni By His Pool, Montecatini 1991
A man in a pink polo and white trousers sits at a round white table by the pool, cup in hand, newspaper on his lap. On the table stand a teapot, fruit and a plate; on a second small table lie magazines and a straw hat. The bottom of the pool is blue mosaic. Behind the hedge with two striped loungers rise a dome and a tower with a flag.
Restaurateur Sirio Maccioni in July 1991 at his villa in Montecatini, Italy. Slim Aarons placed him in the right half and left the rest of the picture to the breakfast, the pool and the buildings behind it. Those layers form a hierarchy: plants in the foreground, then the man at his table, then the water, the hedge and finally dome and tower. He looks up from the newspaper, as if someone has just come in.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
