About this work
Motorcycling Lord, Easton Neston 1990
A man in a beige tweed jacket and bow tie stands behind a red motorcycle, one hand on the seat. Behind him lies a large ornamental pond with a fountain, and beyond it a stone country house with tall windows and a balustrade along the roofline. On the right three girls in light dresses stand at the water's edge, holding tennis balls and rackets.
In 1990 Slim Aarons photographed Lord Hesketh, then Minister of State at the Department of Trade and Industry, by the water at Easton Neston House, his family's estate in Northamptonshire. The motorcycle is a Hesketh V1000; the child in the middle is his daughter Sophie. What makes the picture work is the line it forms: motorcycle, man, fountain and children stand side by side in one row in front of the facade, as if the house were presenting them all at once.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
