About this work
The High Life, Saint-Tropez 1977
A red speedboat lies on deep blue water, its windshield slanted in the light. Behind the glass stands George Hamilton in a navy shirt, laughing broadly, his hands on the edge of the windshield. Beside him two blonde women stand at the rail, squinting and laughing in the sun. At the wheel sits a man in a white T-shirt.
Slim Aarons photographed the actor George Hamilton in August 1977, during a stay in Saint-Tropez, as he headed out to sea in a speedboat with his friends Ruth Luthi and Mike Belami, according to the caption. Which of the others in the picture are those two, the caption does not say. The camera sits almost at boat level and leaves the coast out: no quay, no beach, only the red of the hull against the blue water, and four people already in the middle of their day.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
