About this work
Aerial Miami Beach, Fontainebleau 1972
A small helicopter approaches head-on, the glass bubble so close you can see the passengers sitting, with the rotor a thin streak above. Below lies the curved white hotel with a blue swimming pool and terraces, behind it a long row of apartment blocks along the beach. On the left an inland waterway with villas in the greenery runs until the city disappears in the haze.
A helicopter carrying tourists above the Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach, Florida, in April 1972. Here the aircraft comes straight at the camera. That gives the passengers faces and turns the photograph into a meeting in mid-air, with the hotel, the pool and the gardens as a floor plan below. The coastline runs through the picture like a spine, with the waterway on the left and the open sea on the right.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
