About this work
Pool In St Tropez, circa 1970
From above you see a rectangular pool on a terrace of terracotta tiles, in front of a villa of gray natural stone with arched gateways and cypresses. On a striped mattress at the edge lie two women in bikinis, feet touching. In the water someone floats on an air mattress and another swims; along the facade guests sit on loungers under parasols with a red pattern.
The caption speaks of guests around the pool of a villa in St Tropez, France, circa 1970. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The composition is almost symmetrical: villa, middle gateway and pool lie on one axis, and the guests are scattered across it like pieces on a game board, each on a square of their own. Nobody talks to anyone else. It is precisely that distance between the figures that lets you feel the midday heat.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
